Introduction to Japanese Bladesmithing
( Lectures, Demonstration by teacher) 1 day course
In
this one day course the student will be introduced to
the unique world of traditional Japanese Bladesmithing.
This class is observatory and requires no physical participation
by the student. Murray Carter will demonstrate the complete
process of making a Japanese laminated kitchen knife.
Topics
to include:
• An overview of different types of Japanese cutlery
• Philosophy of Japanese Metallurgy
• The Five Criteria for Superior Cutlery
• Expose’ on Laminates vs. Homogenous Steel
Blades
• Introduction to blade sharpening

Forging and completion of a
Personal Neck Knife, 2 days
In
this two day course, the students will receive a perfect
balance of hands on involvement as well as lecture topics.
Upon completion of the course, students will have designed
and completed their own personal neck knife, and will
have a basic understanding of the blade forging and finishing
process.
Hands-on
techniques will include:

• Scale removal
• Cold forging
• Straightening
• Tempering
• Attaching handless

a Kuro Uchi Series Knife, 3 days
In
this advanced course, students will apply skills learned
in 100 and 200 level courses and further their experience
and understanding through he process of forge welding.
Each student will complete their own Traditional Japanese
Kuro-Uchi kitchen knife, with less reliance on the instructor.

mastery over several very important bladesmithing skills
and complete their own Damascus steel knife. Upon completion
of this course, the student will have a very comprehensive
understanding of Japanese bladesmithing, and will be able
to independently forge knives.

401 Sword forging, 5 days
This
advanced course is for those select few who want to stretch
the limit of their bladesmithing experience. Graduates
of this course will complete a sword that will surpass
ALL other swords in the world in terms of durability and
cutting performance. This is the only course in which
Murray will reveal the most guarded secrets of Traditional
Japanese Bladesmithing.
