100 Introduction to Japanese Bladesmithing
( Lectures, Demonstration by teacher) 1 day course

In this one day course the student will be introduced to the unique world of traditional Japanese Bladesmithing. This class is observatory and requires no physical participation by the student. Murray Carter will demonstrate the complete process of making a Japanese laminated kitchen knife.

Topics to include:
• An overview of different types of Japanese cutlery
• Philosophy of Japanese Metallurgy
• The Five Criteria for Superior Cutlery
• Expose’ on Laminates vs. Homogenous Steel Blades
• Introduction to blade sharpening
• Slide show presentation of bladesmithing in Japan.

Tuition - $1000 per student, limit 6 students

101 Forging and completion of a
Personal Neck Knife, 2 days

In this two day course, the students will receive a perfect balance of hands on involvement as well as lecture topics. Upon completion of the course, students will have designed and completed their own personal neck knife, and will have a basic understanding of the blade forging and finishing process.

Hands-on techniques will include:
• Selection of steel
• Forge maintenance
• Forging to final thickness
• Scale removal
• Cold forging
• Straightening
• Tempering
• Attaching handless
• Sharpening
• Hand sanding to completion
• Kydex sheath making
Lecture topics will include:
• The Philosophy of Japanese Metallurgy
• The Five Criteria for Superior Cutlery
• Expose’ on Laminates vs. Homogenous Steel Blades
• Practical Parameters of Cutlery Design
• Slide show presentation of bladesmithing in Japan.

102 Forging and completion of a
Stainless Fuku-go Zai Series Kitchen knife, 2 days

In this two day course the students will experience a perfect balance of hands on involvement as well as lecture topics. Upon completion of the course, students will have completed their own personal laminated kitchen knife, and will have a basic understanding of the blade forging and finishing process.

Hands-on techniques will include:
• Selection of steel, Forge maintenance
• Forging to final thickness
• Scale removal
• Cold forging
• Straightening
• Tempering
• Attaching handles and
• Sharpening

Whitecrane Ultimate CCW Knife, 3 days

In this three day course, the students will receive a perfect balance of hands on involvement as well as lecture topics. Upon completion of the course, students will have designed and completed their own Whitecrane Ultimate CCW knife, and will have a basic understanding of the blade forging, finishing process and an introduction to advanced Kydex sheath making techniques.

Hands-on techniques will include:

• Scale removal
• Cold forging
• Straightening
• Tempering
• Attaching handless
• Sharpening
• Hand sanding to completion
• Advanced Kydex sheath making

301 Forge welding, forging and completion of
a Kuro Uchi Series Knife, 3 days

In this advanced course, students will apply skills learned in 100 and 200 level courses and further their experience and understanding through he process of forge welding. Each student will complete their own Traditional Japanese Kuro-Uchi kitchen knife, with less reliance on the instructor.

Hands-on techniques will include:

• Selection of steel specific to Kuro-Uchi style knives
• Forge maintenance
• Lamination techniques
• Forge welding
• Forging to final thickness
• Traditional annealing techniques
• Scale removal
• Cold forging
• Straightening
• Quenching
• Tempering
• Grinding
• Polishing
• Attaching handles
• Sharpening and hand sanding to completion.

Damascus Steel Knife, 5 days

In this comprehensive 5 day course the students will gain mastery over several very important bladesmithing skills and complete their own Damascus steel knife. Upon completion of this course, the student will have a very comprehensive understanding of Japanese bladesmithing, and will be able to independently forge knives.

Hands-on techniques will include:

• Selection of steel specific to Damascus steel knives
• Forge maintenance
• Lamination techniques
• Forge welding
• Traditional annealing techniques
• Scale removal
• Cold forging
• Straightening
• Quenching
• Tempering
• Grinding
• Polishing
• Acid etching
• Low temperature silver soldering
• Attaching handles
• Sharpening
• Hand sanding to completion
• Construction of a leather sheath.

401 Sword forging, 5 days

This advanced course is for those select few who want to stretch the limit of their bladesmithing experience. Graduates of this course will complete a sword that will surpass ALL other swords in the world in terms of durability and cutting performance. This is the only course in which Murray will reveal the most guarded secrets of Traditional Japanese Bladesmithing.

Prerequisite: One of the following; 301, 302, 500.
