Dear Patrons,
Last week I sent out a letter that
highlighted the accomplishments of Carter Cutlery for the year 2008.
Although
there were some obstacles and challenges in growing my business in 2008, I was able to overcome them and
excel by sticking to the business plan I had, and
trusting
in the business
philosophy I adhere to.
With your continued support, Carter
Cutlery has proven itself to be a
leader in the cutlery industry, and has proven that it
can
flourish in good
times and in bad. No doubt the greatest contributing factor has been
the
quality of my knives. For some mysterious reason, the Lord has blessed
me with
the ability to forge and heat-treat great knives that perform like a
dream. Of
the three thousand or more knives I have created in the last three
years, I am
unaware of ONE customer who has not been pleased with their purchase!
"I
got the knife and it is perfect. It cuts
like a laser!! Thanks."
Robert Hare
Each
time I heat treat a new batch of knives, I'm humbled when I realize that I've been blessed
with the gift to successfully
heat-treat by hand in a pine charcoal fire.
Of the many types and genres of knives I
create, let me tell you why I make them and how I feel about them. The
largest
percentage of my knives is kitchen knives, followed by neck knives,
then
outdoor/hobby knives and finally custom ordered, one-of-a-kind knives.
I
get great satisfaction from forging fine kitchen knives primarily because they are so incredibly
useful to the customer. I
literally take a small amount of raw materials, and through hard work,
skill
and passion, I turn those materials into a tool that will benefit the
owner for
his or her whole life. A
fine kitchen knife is a pleasure to use,
making cooking fun. It is a labor saving
device and
therefore increases
the standard of living for the owner. The joy of ownership never wanes,
but
conversely, grows with each use of the blade. When I add the
encouragement to
learn how to properly sharpen and maintain that knife, the owners are
empowered
for the rest of their lives.
"Murray
I want to thank you
for the Wabocho and Funayuki that I purchased. I have owned or used all
of the popular cutlery carried by the 'Kitchen Stores.' I did not
realize how much better a custom made knife is for those of us who love
to cook. The balance and edge retention are phenomenal, and they are
sharper than any knife I have ever used." Ted
Wood, Real Estate Developer
Because kitchen knives are purchased with
the intention of using them, the feedback from the customers over the
years has
been immediate. I'm informed whether or not they cut well,
how they hold an
edge, how easy they are to sharpen and how comfortable they are to use.
This immediate feedback is what allows me
to continually improve
the overall
performance of my blades and to correct a problem if one
occurs.
"Can't
tell you how pleased I am to finally end my hunt. I have been looking
for the 'perfect' knife which was the right geometry, length, steel,
sharpness, and just good looking, I am happy to have finally found it.
It was a pleasure using it to prepare tonight's dinner and hopefully
many more. Thanks." Richard
Kishner
Next to creating high performance kitchen
knives, my next source of fulfillment is forging various neck knives. I have found neck knives to be the ultimate
companion tool for active people. Before I forged my
first
neck knife, I
used a folding knife for my daily carry blade, but after using a neck
knife, I
have never looked back. There are just so many advantages to one of my
neck
knives over a conventional folding knife that I want the entire world
to know
there is a much better alternative to folding knives.
"Hi
Murray. I just wanted to tell you that
my two new neck knives are
perfect! I just shaved with the Wharncliffe
model
in blue super steel.
That's my first time! Your knife teachings have enriched my life and
have left me with more thirst for knowledge about Japanese traditions
and
culture especially involving cutlery. I will attend some classes soon I
just have to save the money and if there is any complaint
it's that it
is hard
to get myself to start using your knives because they are so pretty and
perfect brand new. I think you enjoy the thought of your customers using
more than storing though. Thanks again!" Chris
Carter, Avionics
Technician
Compared to folding knives, my
neck knives are much sharper, hold an
edge longer, are easier to maintain, will never break or come loose,
will never
slip out of a pocket to be lost forever, and ounce for ounce are way
stronger
because they are made from one piece of material. In
addition, they are
both easier to conceal and access when properly worn by a cord around
the neck,
and because they are always worn in the same manner and position, under
duress,
they are easier to access. To top it all off, a large percentage of the
price
of a folding knife reflects the labor and skill in assembling the
handle to the
folding blade, whereas the bulk of the price of one of my neck knives
is in the
metallurgy of the blade. Dollar
for
dollar, you get more blade (i.e. better metallurgy) with a Carter
Cutlery neck
knife.
"Just
wanted you to know that
the blade arrived today in perfect condition, no doubt due to the great
packing job. What a beautiful blade! I can't articulate it properly,
but Murray's work just seems so... right. Most of my other knives are
just tools, and that is of course what Murray's blades really are, as
well, but it is nevertheless gratifying to get such satisfaction out of
an inanimate object." John Golden, Attorney
at Law
The outdoor
knives I make are designed to offer
maximum cutting performance
unparalleled by any other blades worldwide. I am blessed that a high
percentage
of my outdoor knife customers actually use these knives in the
wilderness that
they were designed for. Again, feedback from my customers allows me to
modify
the designs so that they are always getting better.
Putting my regular workload behind me and
fully concentrating on one-of-a-kind
custom knives is a rare pleasure. These custom orders
allow
me to
completely focus my attention and totally immerse myself in the
project.
Usually I am pushed out of my comfort zone with the materials and
methods. By
the time I finish the project I have learned some new techniques that will inevitably
benefit every other knife I make. These
custom
orders take
proportionally more time to complete, so I limit the number of orders I
accept
to guarantee I'll have enough time for the other 1000 or so
knives I make each
year. These custom knives, along with my
Damascus steel knives, are the only blades that I stamp with
my prestigious
Master Smith (MS) stamp.
Now that I have shared with
you some thoughts about the various knives I create, let me make you an
offer
that will be a huge benefit to you.
