These prototype cleavers were developed, forged and completed by Murray Carter in preparation for his collaboration with Arnon Kartmazov. Here is some more information regarding that collaboration:
Very few caucasians have studied in Japan and learned ancient bladesmithing secrets from the masters. Murray Carter and Arnon Kartmazov are two such people, who have also settled in Portland, Oregon. Arnon and Murray have known each other since meeting in Japan in the 90’s, so a collaboration between the two was a natural fit. They worked together to develop this new cleaver design that is differentially ground, so that the edge near the heel is ground thicker for chopping and the edge near the tip is ground thinner for finer work. *NOTE: Because all of Carter Cutlery blades have a forged distal taper (thicker in the middle, more thin towards the tip), the blade thickness given is dependent on what part of the blade is measured. On Kitchen knives we measure the blade thickness at the stamp.
